Nourish Juice: Cold Pasteurization Collaboration by Petainer and Hiperbaric

Article - 27 June, 2021

Nourish Juice Bar pasteurizes their products with the high-pressure processing (HHP) technology from Hiperbaric. For this procedure, the perfect packaging solution was found in Petainer Kegs, becoming the world's first keg for this pasteurization process.

Nourish Juice Bar is a retail farm shop and a national wholesale cold-pressed juice company based in Kennett Square, PA.  Its founder, Francine Covelli, is a nutritionist, chef, and community leader who envisioned Nourish to go beyond pressing juice, but also to inspire, connect, and give back to its local community. Nourish Juice Bar is a USDA (US Dept. of Agriculture) Organic certified company for its adherence to standards that are designed to promote sustainability and prohibit chemical pesticides. It is also a Certified B Corp, meaning it voluntarily meets higher standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. Additionally, it is a member of One Percent for the Planet for being a business that donates a percentage of its annual sales to environmental causes.

Challenge breeds innovation

Nourish Juice has strived to produce beverages with the freshest and safest ingredients. That is why it uses High Pressure Processing (HPP) by Hiperbaric, the global leader and manufacturer of HPP technology. HPP is a cold pasteurization technique in which the product is introduced into a vessel and subjected to high levels of isostatic pressure where pathogens and microorganisms are destroyed without affecting  taste, color, or nutrients while increasing the shelf life of the product.

Francine was introduced to the Petainer solutions through One Village Coffee, a Certified B Corp Company that uses Petainer Kegs for their cold brew distribution at Whole Foods, as well as Taprooms at Giant Heirloom Markets. Nourish Juice needed to produce cold-pressed juice in a keg to reach several locations, this is why they were looking for a packaging alternative that at the same time allowed them to use HPP technology as a single solution.

When I had done more research, I found that the Petainer Keg was aligned with our Nourish values as it is 100% recyclable, lightweight, and sustainable. The Petainer Keg itself is a great package, and their support and willingness to work with us on the HPP with Hiperbaric is what really inspired me to move forward.

Petainer became a likely solution because of Petainer Kegs' ability to undergo the HPP process without any risk to the integrity of the kegs or product within them. Nourish Juice was able to fulfill its need to deliver the high-quality juice its clients were expecting while extending the shelf life of its products to 75 days. Additionally, it benefits on their return on investment thanks to the logistical savings that are involved with one-way products.

A Hiperbaric and Petainer partnership is born

Now, Petainer has entered the cold-pressed juice market, an area growing in consumer demand. For producers and retailers, the juice market holds unique challenges due to the short shelf life of the products in its unpasteurized form and Petainer, together with Hiperbaric, now offers an innovative way to solve these challenges.

Petainer and Hiperbaric are now working together to promote the world's first keg for High Pressure Processing of beverages. The Petainer keg will revolutionize how HPP beverages are packaged and is a breakthrough global innovation which offers beverage manufacturers safe, sustainable, and cost-efficient packaging. www.nourishjuicebar.com

The solution of using Petainer and Hiperbaric technology achieves the best of the output efficiencies of juicing production. The result of Petainer kegs with HPP technology meets the high-standard requirements of both consumers and manufacturers. It preserves the nutrients that juice can give, maintains its premium quality, clean labeling, food safety, and extends its shelf life which reduces the CO2 footprint due to the significant reduction of packaging.
